Prohibition on Certain Vehicles

With warm weather becoming more frequent, the Chambersburg Police Department has seen an increase in the number of complaints concerning off-road vehicles and off-road motorcycles being operated on the roadways and sidewalks within the Borough of Chambersburg. The Chambersburg Police Department would like to take the opportunity to advise the public that this type of activity is not legal and therefor not permitted.

The operation of certain mopeds, motor-driven cycles and motorcycles can be a legal from of transportation when other regulatory requirements are met. Generally speaking if a motorized vehicle is designed for off-road use it is not permitted to be operated on a roadway or sidewalk. If a motorized vehicle is designed to be operated on a roadway the vehicle is most likely required to be registered, insured and inspected and the operator is required to have a valid license to operate the vehicle.

For specific details for the license, registration, inspection and insurance requirements for mopeds, motor-driven cycles and motorcycles please refer to the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation website (www.dmv.pa.gov) and look for the FACT SHEET concerning these types of vehicle.
