As the holiday shopping season is upon upon, The Chambersburg Police Dept. would like to provide information to our residents as a means of Crime Prevention - with special attention to package thefts and theft from your vehicle. 

Ways to prevent package theft:  

• Bring packages in immediately after delivery.
• Sign-up for delivery alerts and track packages.
• Schedule delivery for a time when someone will be home.
• Customize delivery by providing instructions online and request that packages are placed in less conspicuous spots, such as a side door or within a fenced area.
• Require signature on delivery.
• Have packages shipped to workplace, office or designated secure pick-up locations.
• Use ship to store option when ordering.
• Ask neighbor to secure the package.
• Consider home security cameras, such as video door bell.

Shopping Safety tips to help ensure a positive holiday shopping experience: 

*When exiting your car, be sure you always take your purse, wallet, cellphone, laptop, and other items with you.  Criminals will break your windows to get to items of value.

*If you cannot take your valuables with you, lock them up in the trunk before you leave your home. By placing them in the trunk upon your arrival, you could alert thieves to the valuables that lie defenseless in your trunk.

*If you’re out shopping, don’t leave your purchases visible in your car; place them discreetly in your trunk instead. Additionally, be sure to park in areas that have adequate lighting, and consider shopping with someone rather than going alone, especially if you are shopping in the evening hours.

*Be aware of your surroundings at all times and walk with purpose. Keep your keys ready in your hand before getting into your car, and report any suspicious people or activity to the law enforcement right away.

*Keep the amount of available cash you have on you at a minimum. Keep credit cards secure and remember to return them to your wallet safely after the transaction. Keep a copy of credit card numbers so it’s convenient to report any missing cards immediately.  Keep track of all your credit and debit cards and keep receipts to compare to your monthly statement.
