The Chambersburg Police Department is aware of, and consistently enforcing traffic violations involving the CSX Train blocking the railroad crossing on Orchard Drive next to the Rain Tunnel Carwash. The extended blockage is due to switching operations being conducted at the CSX Intermodal on Kriner Road. Per PA State Law, a train may not block any crossing for more than 5 minutes when conducting switching operations. On Wednesday, 7-20-22, members of the Chambersburg Police Department and CSX met to discuss this traffic safety issue.

Both agencies are working together to find solutions to limit the amount of violations and lessen the inconvenience experienced by motorists and businesses on Orchard Drive. If you find yourself stopped for a train blocking the crossing on Orchard Drive for more than 5 minutes, you can call the CSX reporting line at 1-800-232-0144 and refer to crossing # 831904M. Another agency to file a complaint with is the Federal Railroad Administration (USDOT). You can access the website using http://www.fra.dot.gov/blockedcrossings. You may also report the blockage to the CPD, who will review surveillance footage to determine the exact amount of time the train was blocking the crossing. Please refrain from making unsafe traffic movements, such as U-turns and passing on the shoulders, to avoid being delayed.
