False Alarm to Public Safety



On 6/15/2017, at approx. 2324 hrs, the Chambersburg Police Department was dispatched to the Chambersburg Hospital for a report of an active shooter at the hospital.  The original call was received by phone at the hospital switchboard from a male who identified himself as "Eric".  The switchboard passed on the information to hospital security who called 911.  Chambersburg Police along with the PA State Police responded to the hospital.  Initial responding units found nothing to support the reports made by the caller. 

However, due to the safety concerns of staff and patients, the Chambersburg Hospital was put on lockdown.  The Chambersburg Police, PA State Police and hospital security & staff conducted a search of the hospital for any suspicious persons, etc.  Upon completing a search of the hospital, it was determined that no evidence exist to support an active shooter at the hospital.  There were no injuries to staff or patients during this incident.  However, the staff and patients were seriously inconvenienced as a result of the False Alarm.    

Initial investigation by the Chambersburg Police Department revealed that the suspect utilized a cell phone to make the call to the hospital and that the caller was likely calling from another state.   Further investigation is continuing.   Charges of False Alarm to Public Safety are pending against the suspect who called in the False Alarm / Report upon his identification.
